Squad Cuts for Registration: Barcelona Takes Immediate Action

Squad Cuts for Registration Barcelona Takes Immediate Action

ALLSPORTS – Barcelona is accelerating its efforts to streamline the squad, focusing on finalizing several player exits before the transfer window closes.

One of the imminent departures is veteran midfielder Oriol Romeu, whose contract is expected to be terminated within the next 24 hours.

This move is part of a broader strategy to resolve ongoing player registration issues. Romeu’s departure will free up a significant portion of the club’s wage bill.

The impact of this decision is already being felt, as it immediately opens the door for another player in the squad. A young defender is now set to be officially registered with La Liga.

Bitter End to Romeu’s Second Spell

Oriol Romeu’s second stint with Barcelona is coming to a rather disappointing conclusion. The 32-year-old midfielder is no longer part of new manager Hansi Flick’s plans.

Club officials have reportedly reached an agreement with Romeu to terminate his contract — nearly 10 months before its original expiration date.

Romeu was already absent from the team’s training session on Wednesday. The termination is expected to be made official on Thursday (August 21, 2025).

Gerard Martin Gets His Chance

While Romeu’s exit marks the end of an era, it also creates a new opportunity. The freed-up wage space will be used immediately.

Barcelona plans to register young defender Gerard Martin, who will now be eligible for the upcoming league match.

With his registration cleared, Martin will be available for the squad when Barcelona travels to face Levante this Saturday.

Shift in Registration Priorities

Interestingly, Gerard Martin’s registration wasn’t initially part of Barcelona’s top priority list. The club originally intended to register goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny first.

However, that plan has been postponed, as Szczesny’s registration depends on the departure of backup keeper Inaki Pena. Pena’s move to Como or another club has yet to materialize.

As a result, Barcelona has shifted focus and fast-tracked the inclusion of Gerard Martin into the squad.
